The Learning Domains - Physics

According to Education, learning is an activity which aims at changes in behavior post instruction. It is based upon predefined objectives. The changes in behavior of a learner are overt and can be measured. There  are three domains of learning.

Any activity of learning, irrespective of the branch of knowledge, reaches its objective only when the objectives of these three domains are met. This article tries to introduce the domains of  learning Physics.

The Three Learning Domains:
  • ·        Cognitive or Head Domain – Developed by Dr. Benjamin .S.Bloom.
  • ·        Psychomotor or Hand Domain - Developed by Dr. R.H.Dave.
  • ·        Affective or Heart Domain - Developed by Dr. David Krothwel.

The Cognitive Domain of Learning:
  • ·        The objectives of this domain relate to the head.
  • ·        Instructions of  this domain are meant to develop thinking in the student on the topic.
  • ·        The difficulty levels to be surmounted one after the other in this domain are:

·        Knowledge
·        Understanding
·        Application
·        Analysis
·        Synthesis
·        Evaluation
  • ·        Knowledge is the least difficult stage and the evaluation stage forms the highest pinnacle to be surmounted.
  • ·        The cognitive domain of learning Physics comprises of the knowledge of the concepts of Physics.

The Psychomotor Domain of Learning:
  • ·        The objectives of this domain relate to the hand.
  • ·        Instructions of  this domain are meant to develop doing in the student on the topic.
  • ·        The difficulty levels to be surmounted one after the other in this domain are:

·        Imitation
·        Manipulation
·        Precision
·        Articulation
·        Naturalization
  • ·        Imitation is the least difficult stage and naturalization stage forms the topmost pinnacle to be surmounted.
  • ·        The psychomotor domain of learning Physics comprises of acquiring the skills of experimentation.

 The Affective Domain of Learning:
  • ·        The objectives of this domain relate to the heart.
  • ·        Instructions of  this domain are meant to develop feelings in the student on the topic.
  • ·        The difficulty levels to be surmounted one after the other in this domain are:

·        Receive
·        Respond
·        Value
·        Organization
·        Characterization

Receive is the least difficult stage and Characterization stage forms the topmost pinnacle to be surmounted

The affective domain of learning Physics comprises of  developing scientific attitude.

Conclusion: The Internet has several resources which define the stages of difficulty of the three domains.

Learning brings out a change in behavior of the learner only when the provided instruction can make him think using his head, do things using his hands and feel from his heart on the subject.
