Purpose of Research and Characteristics of Different Types of Research

Purpose of Research:

Research on any subject is carried out with the objective of collecting new data, analyzing it and interpreting it to understand the existing events / phenomenon or predict the existence of yet to be known or seen events / phenomenon. It leads to better understanding and organization of the existing body of knowledge. It also can provide scientific basis to historical events or phenomenon, which are otherwise accepted on their face value. In this way, research is always relevant chronologically or with respect to time.

The fundamental assumption of any research is that there is a constant relationship between cause and effect in nature or in society under given situations. Replication of the situation and introduction of the cause would lead to the  manifestation of the effect, even under controlled conditions.

Types of Research:

Basic Research: It is conducted to add new knowledge to the already existing theory of a subject. It strengthens the roots or fundamental concepts and principals of the subject.

Applied Research: As the name suggests, this research involves the application of the knowledge gained from basic or fundamental research to solve the practical problems in the field of education.

Action Research: It is the quick-fix research done by the education professionals to resolve every day problems and issues they face in the classroom or within the  institution of the school. Action research are characterized by their short time of planning and creativity in execution. Otherwise, research is a time consuming activity and requires patience.

Evaluation Research: It is the application of standard methods of social sciences in evaluation and assessment processes to make them more objective and usable.

Conclusion: While basic and applied research are generally carried out by research scholars or students before joining the profession, action and evaluation research are carried out by in-service professionals to address their every-day work related issues.
