Role of Evaluation in Education

The three pillars of learning are framing the instructional objectives, design and delivery of the instruction and evaluation of the learning experience. Evaluation is technically the sum of measurement and value judgement.

Thus, the process of evaluation involves its quantitative and qualitative aspects respectively. The role of evaluation in education can be better understood by knowing about its different stake holders.

Role of Evaluation in Education:

For the Learner:
·        The result of the assessment of the learning experiences is of utmost importance to the learner.
·        It provides an idea on the extent to which the learner could understand the instruction provided to him/her all along the year.
·        It also provides the eligibility to the student to pursue higher learning.

For the Teacher:
·        The result of the students in examinations provides an idea to the extent to which the teacher succeeded in reaching the set instructional objectives at the beginning of the academic year.
·        This information also provides an insight on the effectiveness of the teaching style and aids used in the teaching process.
·        Accordingly, necessary changes can be made in the instructional strategies for the students of the next academic year.

For the Parents:
·        The performance of the ward at school is known to the parents by knowing about the assessment result at the end of an academic year.
·        The role of parents in the advancement of child academically is also revealed by these results.
·        The role of parents in the learning of their child is about 66 percent.
·        The roles of teachers and the student himself or herself in the learning are about 33 percent each.
·        This data stresses on the importance of heredity and environment at home on learning of the child and related psychology to evaluation.

For the Head Master:
·        Information on the performance of different classes plays a vital role in the assessment of the faculty by the headmaster.
·        Based on the results of the students in a particular subject, its teacher is either rewarded or guided by the headmaster.
·        The results also provide an insight to the headmaster on the effectiveness or lack of infrastructure in the school organization.

For the School Management:
·        The school management is a democratic body which plans, organizes and executes the developmental activities and maintenance of the organization as a whole.
·        Depending on the suggestions made by the headmaster on the requirements and promotion of the organization, the management allocates funds for the same.

For the Education Policy Makers:
·        Depending on the results of the schools in a particular locality, the educational policy makers take the necessary steps to either improve the existing conditions or maintain the optimum state of affairs.
·        The results also provide an idea on the extent to which the long term goals of education are met in a locality.

Conclusion:In this way, different stakeholders have different expectations of the results of evaluation, assessed and announced at the end of an academic year.
